might sound like the kind of liqueur which your granny would bring back off holiday, but Karuna™ is yet another form of Reiki, this time developed by William Rand. It is a mix of Reiki, Tera Mai and SKHM (which has always seemed to me a bit unnecessary and recursive, but it did allow him to append the ™ sign). Vince Amador took Karuna, added work with mudras – something also found in Raku Kai – and founded Karuna Ki. Karuna is a Sanskrit word, meaning compassion. These are some of the Symbols claimed by Karuna, Karuna Ki, Tera Mai, and several schools of Reiki. All of these disciplines use the main Reiki Symbols, too. Each Symbol has 2 illustrations - the Symbol itself, and a diagram showing how to draw it.
Zonar
Zonar - which means “Infinity” or “Eternity” - is used specifically for working with past-life issues and problems encountered through the working-out of negative karma, and to help with problems or issues not clearly defined. Because Zonar works to heal memories of trauma stored within the cells of the physical body, it has been used successfully to treat adult survivors of abuse. It represents both infinity and eternity. Some Masters suggest that you draw the 'Z' first once only, and then the Infinity sign three times.
Halu
You would use Zonar for mainly physical problems. If the issues requiring Healing are of a more Spiritual or psychological nature, then Halu is appropriate. Halu is used to restore balance by dissolving the negative emotional patterns which we store in our minds (the patterns which cause us to live in delusion or in denial). As a consequence of this, it can be used to repel psychic attacks which are aimed at our personalities or selfesteem, and against psychological pressure, emotional blackmail, or bullying. It represents Love, Truth and Harmony. According to your belief-system, this symbol is either Zonar with an added pyramid, or a representation of a Buddhist stupa.
Harth
Harth is a two-dimensional representation of a pyramid, and a Symbol of Love, Truth, Harmony and Balance. When you have cleansed an area of negative energy, Harth is used to cover and protect it. Be careful using this Symbol, as once it is in place is is extremely difficult to remove! The pyramid has always been a symbol of protection, renewal ,stability, initiation and rebirth – from this, Harth derives a multitude of secondary uses: to heal relationships; to assist in the treatment of addictive disorders; and to restore our feelings of balance and well-being when we are depressed.
Iava
While you draw the loops in this Symbol say (in order) “Fire, Air, Water, Earth”and invoke the Four Elements. Iava balances these Elements out within us (if you study it, you will see that Iava includes the fifth Element of Spirit, too). Iava helps to awaken true sight (awareness of the reality which lies beyond conditioned awareness) and helps us to live in the moment: this has the dual effect of freeing you from past conditioning and enabling you to realise what your true Path and destiny are, so that you can bring them into reality. When we are walking our true Path, many emotional and physical obstacles are removed from daily life. It is also used for giving healing to Mother Earth.
Shanti
Shanti is the Sanskrit word for “Peace”. As a Symbol, it is used to heal the past and to bring into people, places or situations the energy of Divine Peace. It works to heal the past by sending Divine Peace there, then releasing and dissolving those patterns and beliefs which are preventing us from living a fulfilled life in the present. It is appropriate for abuse, addictions, obsessive compulsive behaviour and for nightmares. You can also use it, in combination with visualisation, to bring about the best result possible in a situation (note: this may not necessarily be the same as what you want – it will the best result for all parties involved). Both William Rand and Kathleen Milner use Shanti in Attunements: it is drawn over the student's body and swept off over their hands while the Attuning Master affirms “You are filled with Divine Peace”.
Gnosa
Gnosa is held to be one of the main symbols of Karuna™ and Karuna Ki. Related to gnosis – the Classical Greek word for knowledge – it is used to create or to strengthen a connection with your Higher Self, and to bring this knowledge to you on a conscious level.
Rama
Rama is essentially a symbol for grounding and cleansing. It is held to align with the 7 directions (left, right, in front, behind, above, below and within) and to ground these via a connection to the planet's telluric energies, and harmonising the chakra body at the same time. It clears and cleanses blocked energy from the lower chakras. You can also use it to cleanse objects or places of negative energy. New Age sources give Rama a more magical meaning – it can increase your sense of determination and purpose, while helping you to define and manifest your goals on the material plane. Within Karuna™ and Karuna Ki, Rama is drawn on or over one's feet to connect with Earth energy, supposedly to bring balance and to enable ki to flow more freely in larger quantities.
Om
Om – generally pronounced “AUM” - is believed throughout the Buddhist world to represent the universe: all creation, potential and actual. A represents the roots of all that is created; U stands for the individual souls and entities; M symbolises all that is. In the Karuna styles of Reiki, Om can be used either for healing – in which case it treats the aura, cleaning, repairing and harmonising it; or in Attunements, when it has a “sealing” function. In either case, it is visualised as shining gold in colour.
Dumo
Note the variant forms of this Symbol - either is acceptable. Dumo – also called the Tibetan Dai Ko Myo – is a powerful symbol. For healing, it can be used (like Johre) to help raise kundalini fire up the spine. It draws negative energies from the physical body and thus is good for all infectious or immune-system related diseases. Equally, it can be used on the energy body to release negative emotional- or thought-patterns. It can also be used on food (to ease digestion)or medicines (to reduce side-effects). Use it to cleanse an object or place before placing Harth over as a protective shield. Dumo is also the primary symbol in the Healing Attunement.
Healing TechniquesLike Seichim, Karuna healing is generally a lot more intuitive than either Traditional Usui or Tibetan Reiki. There are no formal hand positions, nor is any one symbol the most important. Having said that, there are certain traditional techniques which individuals have developed and passed on.
Healing Hand Positions:Karuna works primarily on the emotional level: physical healing does occur, but usually this is due to the emotional states which have given rise to the physical issues being resolved. As any of our feelings and emotions arise from mental states, the simplest way to give Karuna is to concentrate on the head – the eyes, temples, occiput and crown. For a more extensive treatment, you could concentrate on the main chakra points, or use the Jin Shin Jyutsu sequence Harmonising With the Source of Life: Place your right palm or fingers on the top of your Healee's head. This maintains energy balance throughout the session. Place your left fingertips between your Healee's eyebrows. This balances energy throughout the body at a deep level, and improves mental functions. Place the fingertips of your left hand (or just the tip of your left index finger) on the tip of your Healee's nose. This balances physical energies at a more superficial level than the previous position. Place your left fingertips on your Healee's sternum (I find that placing them towards the upper part of the sternum is most effective) this will help the breathing functions, pelvic girdle and hips. Move your left fingertips down to the base of your healee's sternum, just above the solar plexus. This revitalises Life Energy at its central source within the body. Now place your fingertips over the pubic bone, to balance the flow of energy throughout the body, and strengthen the spine. Remember your right hand? Leave your left fingertips over the pubic bone and place your right fingers at the base of the spine in the area of the cocccyx, the tail bone. This will finish balancing the flow of energy through your Healee's body, as well as improving circulation in the lower body. Now finish. Scan your hands over your Healee and go back to any areas which you feel need further attention. Be aware of any odd areas in their energy field, place your hands over these areas, and allow Karuna to flow through.
